This was another web video Co-directed by myself and Crystal Moselle, entitled “Beautiful Dreamer”. We paid a visit to the home of Chanel’s Global Creative Director of Makeup, Peter Philips. His Manhattan home was filled with art, makeup, and this precious robot doll he constructed out Chanel’s lipstick and rouge cases. I was compelled to play with the robot in his living room, whose arms extended out in that “Transformers-like” manner, shooting out red lipstick, just like the rocket-like feet.
The King of Cosmetics talked to us about the art of sculpting faces a’la Irving Penn photography and observing his mothers beauty routine as a child.
IF you don’t know much about Peter Phillips, you might remember his creation, a Chanel nail polish called JADE which sold out in a heartbeat, but went for $100 a bottle on eBay at its peak. He masterminded a limited edition Chanel temporary tattoo with Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel’s Spring 2010 show, which of course caused an anticipated buzz through an eager waiting list before the designs went public. Moreover, the Belgian beauty guru was simply a delight to interview, and transmitted the purity of a curious child who reached his dreams, directing the most prestigious luxury beauty department in the industry.
