On the eve of Fashion Week at The Standard New York, Designers Jeffrey and Robert (known as Costello Tagliapietra) are preparing for their big Fashion Show this week. One of us Standardites swung through their room to check up on their activities and make sure they were all fine and happy.

In the room, there was lots of the usual fitting routines – hair, shoes, dresses, casual conversations, polaroiding, etc. There was also discussion of fashion movies like Eyes of Laura Mars, the ‘78 film with the chic Faye Dunaway about the Fashion business. The film Alien popped up as their favorite Fashion film with Sigourney Weaver as the masterful alpha female. When picking favorite fashion films, it’s not really about the clothes they say, it’s about the attitude of the woman in the film. For the Costello men, a woman can rock a worn tank top and panties and embody the incredible fierce feminine style they yearn for. When Sigourney Weaver comes out of the isolation chamber calling the alien a “bitch”… well, that is the Costello women incarnate.

The table contains lots of model comp cards, Willy Wonka candy and some Trail Mix – the veritable diet for stressed fashion folks. There was also an appearance with the stellar hairdresser from the hair salon, Rita Hazan. It was Thursday 10pm at The Standard and the building was about explode for its seminal fashion week event – the Lykke Li Fendi party at Top of The Standard. The Costello men are still in room 1623 late night finishing finishing final touches. “I might sneak in upstairs for a sec” says one of the designers…but their minds are on the floral inspirations. Here’s a little Q&A with the duo to further illuminate their moods on this early Fashion Week night.

Welcome to another Fashion Week. How is it treating you so far?

Great, we are at The Standard doing fittings, which means breaks can be spent catching up with the likes of Joey Jalleo, Scott Meriam, and Jauretsi!

Yes, there’s quite a variety of characters working here. Hah. Can u tell us what was the inspiration for your colors/patterns this season?

It started with a quote from Georgia Okeefe. We knew we wanted something that felt romantic and dreamlike. The prints came out of photographs we took of flowers and then layered and abstracted on the computer. Another print came from a watercolor we did and again manipulated on the computer, the result being something in between a graphic floral and a gravestone rubbing.

The colors come out of us playing with paint. Every season we like to experiment with watercolors to feel out what the color story will be the end resulting in blues whose hues are of algae and tide pools and browns and golds found in asian gardens. When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)

If you had to pick 1 or 2 songs that embody this collection, what would they be?

We love M83 midnight city…. the whole song lives in a permanent crescendo. John Maus’s Head for the Country has the dreaminess we were looking for.

You guys are speaking at the Vanity Fair confernce on the beauty of art in film. Tell me your top 3 fav fashion inspirations in film?

We watch 3 Women all of the time! Sissy Spacek and Shelly Duvall are our favorites and the whole film is based on a dream Altman had! Don’t Look Now has that really beautiful dark seventies quality we love. Alien! Sigourney embodies confidence and power, and she looks amazing the whole time.

Thank you for choosing to conduct your fittings at The Standard hotel. What is your favorite area of the hotel to lounge in?

The restaurant of course… the best burger and fries in the city and of course the Boom!

If you had to describe the “Costello woman” in a one-liner, what would it be?

She embraces being a woman… she is someone who knows what she wants in life and is not afraid of her femininity and her romantic side.

This fashion week, what are you most excited about this week?

The weekend after… when we get to rest!
